Meet Our Team

Matt Atkins, PhD, LP

Licensed Psychologist and Clinical Director

I believe it takes a great deal of courage to reach out for help, and I hope to provide the support and treatment you are seeking. As a psychologist, I strive to create a safe space where you can begin to address the challenges in your life and start to heal. Whether seeking help for yourself or someone close to you, finding a professional to trust can be a difficult challenge. The majority of my work is focused on helping individuals negotiate the emotional setbacks they encounter throughout their lives. Feeling disconnected from ourselves and others, individuals can easily become depressed, anxious, or feel broken. My work in individual therapy focuses upon helping my clients to reconnect to stronger parts of themselves.  I utilize an integrative approach that combines the science of psychology with interpersonal warmth, acceptance and understanding. I have clinical expertise in mood disorders, including anxiety and depression, trauma, including adolescent and adult sexual assault, childhood abuse and neglect, relationship violence/domestic violence, military combat, and substance use disorders.
When working with individuals who have encountered trauma in their lives, I recognize that this experience often leaves them with the sense that a significant part of who they are has been lost. Trauma, including abuse, neglect, and life-threatening events, may cause some to feel anxious, scared, angry, and confused. As a psychologist, I have specialized training in working with individuals who have encountered such trauma.

My work with individuals struggling with substance use disorders and addiction takes into consideration the fact that often times the struggles individuals face are exacerbated by their ineffective attempts to cope. This tendency cannot be demonstrated more clearly as it is in the case of addiction and chemical dependency. The course of addiction can be long and painful, and it may often feel as though hope is not available. Despite this, millions of individuals have battled through addiction and are able to lead healthy, vibrant lives. If addiction is affecting your life, and you are looking to recover, therapy can be an important part of the equation. As a psychologist, I have received extensive training in the area of substance dependence and have helped many individuals looking to recover from the pain of addiction.

I obtained my Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Texas and completed my Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System in Substance Use Disorders. I am currently a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Minnesota and am a member of the American Psychological Association (APA). I work at Club Recovery as the Clinical Director and strive to ensure that individuals who come to Club Recovery receive comprehensive care for their mental health and substance use challenges. I maintain flexible work-hours designed to assure you get the help you need without having to significantly interfere with the other important parts of your life, including work and family. I also encourage you to contact me with any questions.

Craig Johnson, LADC

Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor
MN Certified Gambling Treatment Provider

As a licensed addictions counselor and mental health practitioner with Club Recovery I understand very well and see myself in the people I serve. I have come to develop my perspective on treatment from my own journey in recovery and by pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees focusing on addiction and psychology. I completed the Addiction Studies Program at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, and earned my Master’s Degree at St. Mary’s University in Counseling and Psychology and hold certification from the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board (IGCCB) as a Level II trained Gambling Treatment Provider. I have participated in various studies and continuing education programs to enhance my clinical capabilities and believe I have developed an effective and eclectic approach to the treatment of addiction.

My goal with all of my clients is to provide an opportunity for them to learn about the disease of addiction, to develop a comprehensive treatment plan centered on specific skills they will need to be successful in recovery, and to learn new thinking and coping skills to live a meaningful productive life. I strive to empower clients to take responsibility for their own lives by imparting to them the skills to identify self-defeating behaviors and examine patterns of thinking, feeling and responding.

The first step in this process is to acknowledge that one’s repeated attempts to end the cycle of addiction require more than just willpower. Recovery is a process of learning how to live differently. I’m ready to be with you in this processes leading to a happier life.

Kate Burek, LADC

Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor

I believe that when people with substance use disorders are treated with respect, kindness and positivity they have a greater potential to make meaningful changes in their lives. I seek to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for learning and growth.  My key interests in counseling include the science of substance use disorder and recovery, anti-stigma and human rights for people with use disorders, mindfulness, motivational interviewing and personal resilience.  No one approach is right for every person in recovery.  I believe that knowledge, flexibility, choices and safety help each individual find a perspective and path that works for her or him.

I received my Bachelor’s degree in History.  After graduation, I worked in occupational health and safety and in environmental management compliance for the construction industry for a number of years.    I began working at Club Recovery in 2010 in administration and insurance coordination.  My experiences working at a treatment program, led me to seek and complete my addiction studies certificate at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and become a licensed alcohol and drug counselor.

I am committed to providing my clients with the safety, knowledge and skills needed to transform their lives in the way they desire. I recognize the risk that individuals take in reaching out for help, and work to honor that whenever I meet with someone who has bravely begun the journey.

Kate serves as our Compliance Monitoring and Auditing Manager and leads our Women’s Intensive Outpatient Therapy group.

Ryan Kordiak, LADC

Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor

I have been given the opportunity to work alongside individuals struggling with substance use disorders and addiction issues for the past 11 years. In that time, I have marveled at the courage, resiliency, compassion, and intelligence of those with whom I work. For those of us who have walked the long day’s journey of substance abuse and addiction into night, we may feel there are few places to turn. As a person in long term recovery I can relate with the feelings of bewilderment, loss, pain, and inescapable worry that can inhibit an individual from seeking help. As a clinician, I understand that addiction is a treatable disease, is all too common, and is one of the greatest health issues we as a society face today.

I am extremely passionate about recovery from alcohol and drugs and enjoy sharing that passion with clients. I strongly believe that recovery from addiction not only provides an individual with a second chance at life, but offers a quality of life that was previously unimaginable. As a clinician, I feel that it is important to be genuine and to meet an individual where they are. I strive to help my clients cope with feelings of shame and guilt towards their substance use, and work from the perspective of “good person, bad disease.” I also strive to encourage my clients by reinforcing the concept that they have the power to rise up each day and make things better.

I have worked as an addictions counselor at Club Recovery since 2014, after receiving my B.A. in Psychology from Argosy University. Prior to entering the clinical field I worked with individuals in early recovery as a sober house manager. I was also in the military for over 10 years, and have served multiple combat deployments to Iraq and peace keeping deployments to Bosnia and Kosovo. I currently work at Club Recovery as an LADC, and facilitate the Men’s Evening Intensive Outpatient Treatment groups.

Ryan serves as our group counselor for the Men’s Intensive Outpatient Therapy group on weekday evenings.

Sarah Atkins, PhD, LP

Licensed Psychologist

I believe each of us has unique strengths and experiences that allow us to navigate life’s challenges. However, sometimes, we find ourselves struggling, and no matter how hard we try; our usual ways of coping do not work, and we cannot seem to find a way out on our own. As a psychologist, I recognize that it can be very difficult to seek help. I believe that a collaborative, trusting, and empathic therapeutic relationship serves as the foundation for clients to experience meaningful growth and change.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in psychodynamic theory and incorporates aspects of family systems, developmental, emotion-focused, and cognitive behavioral theories. I collaborate with my clients to explore their concerns and develop a shared understanding of the changes they want to make in their lives. I believe that examining client’s past relational experiences, patterns, and ways of coping is essential to understanding the causes of current struggles, expanding self-understanding, and creating helpful changes in the present. Throughout the therapy process, I strive to help clients recognize and utilize their strengths, as they take steps toward their goals.

Mental health concerns often contribute to difficulty recovering from substance use disorders. As a psychologist at Club Recovery, I provide individual therapy for clients with mental health concerns, and collaborate closely with Club Recovery’s group counselors to provide client’s holistic care. I specialize in providing individual therapy to clients recovering from trauma (e.g., childhood abuse or neglect, sexual assault, relationship violence); facing issues in their family of origin or other relationships; experiencing difficulty coping with life transitions (e.g., career, parenting, divorce); or suffering from anxiety or depression. I also have training in conducting couples and family therapy. In addition to providing therapy services at Club Recovery, I coordinate outcomes research and outreach within the community. These roles allow me the opportunity to connect the ideas and practices of Club Recovery, to the efforts of other groups and organizations within the Twin Cities.

I earned a Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology with an Emphasis in Child and Family Therapy from the University of North Texas. I have had the opportunity to work with diverse clients in a variety of settings including, community mental health, hospital, college counseling, and private practice. These experiences have fostered a deep respect and appreciation for helping facilitate the growth and change process of others. I invite you to give me a call to discuss your unique situation and to consider together what you may need.

I have an extensive experience in working with clients recovering from trauma, in addition to issues with physical/emotional/sexual-abuse. Originally from Middle-East, I speak Farsi and have a deep understanding about cultural differences, pains of immigration, and family and religious conflicts.

I earned a Doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Minnesota. I have had the opportunity to work with diverse clients in a variety of settings including, community mental health, residential treatment, college counseling, and private practice. My therapeutic approach to working with clients is integrative with a foundation in client-centered perspective, because I view clients as their best advocates. I incorporate existential and humanistic theories to support clients in finding a sense of purpose and meaning, and cognitive-behavioral theories to help clients identify the relationship between their thoughts, behaviors, and emotional experiences. One of my areas of specialty is working with clients who are experiencing substance use and mental health issues, including the effects of anxiety, depression, grief and loss, social inequities, and trauma. I believe there is a unique relationship between a client’s substance use and their wellbeing.

When clients are provided with a safe and nonjudgmental space to explore their past and present, they can begin to identify how their mental health has been affected by their substance use and often how their substance use has been a means to cope with their life challenges. As clients navigate this dual relationship, they can begin to make small adjustments to their behaviors and thoughts to make lasting changes within their lives and find a deeper connection within their relationships.

I earned a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Co-Occurring Disorders at the University of St. Thomas. In terms of previous clinical experience, I served as a Counseling Psychology Intern at Slate and Club Recovery working with clients individually and in group settings. I also interned at hospice as a caring companion and bereavement support, and served as a co-facilitator for an addiction awareness group for college students.

Troy Mund, LADC

Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor

Everyone has their own specific issues relating to their addiction. The start to lasting recovery includes discovering what needs were filled by substance use and how to manage these needs differently while sober. I believe treatment works best with a client-centered approach. I utilize mindfulness, motivational interviewing, SMART Recovery, and cognitive behavioral therapy to support my clients in changing unhelpful thinking patterns and building their internal motivation for change.

Years after receiving my Bachelor’s Degree from Minnesota State University Moorhead, I returned to school and completed the Addiction Counseling Program at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. Currently, I am working toward my Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota. I have experience working in the full continuum of care, from residential treatment to intensive outpatient co-occurring treatment programs. Through these experiences, I developed an understanding of the different levels of care available to clients that can aid them in maintaining sobriety, and the common struggles many clients endure to overcome addiction.

Along with providing individual counseling, I facilitate the Relapse Prevention Group at Club Recovery. This group is designed to focus on individuals who have prior treatment experience and want to build their relapse preventions skills, as well as their sober support networks. I am also the primary group counselor for the Continuing Care Group. This group offers individuals who are looking for a supportive step-down treatment program after completing an intensive outpatient or outpatient treatment program for substance use.

Troy serves as our group counselor for the Relapse Prevention group and the Continuing Care group.

Elly Frickey, PhD

POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW

“Resilient.” This is a word I often use to describe clients I have the pleasure of working with in therapy, as I am struck by the human ability to cope with suffering. Yet, sometimes the ways we have learned to cope with such struggles end up taking us further away from the person we most want to be.

As a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Slate, I believe therapy is fundamentally a safe, genuine, and trusting relationship which serves as the primary vehicle for change. In that secure and nonjudgmental relationship, we can evaluate together how past painful experiences might shape the way you respond to your current concerns, to other people, and to your thoughts/emotions. When we have insight into where our patterns come from, we can then decide whether they are still serving us in the here and now; if they are not, we can try something new together.

I specialize in working with adults and couples. Some of my areas of expertise include working with clients experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, family of origin concerns, and struggles in their relationships. My theoretical orientation is an intentional integration of psychodynamic principles coupled with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy perspectives and skills. I also have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Exposure and Response Prevention, and Emotion-Focused Therapy. The breadth of these perspectives allows me to individually tailor my work with clients to be most effective for their unique concerns.

I received my Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Iowa State University and did my pre-doctoral internship at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.

It is my belief that treatment offers clients the powerful opportunity to learn the many modalities and supports that they can incorporate into their daily life to support their recovery. I believe that clients benefit most from a client-centered approach that focuses on their specific needs. Areas I often focus on in sessions with my clients include identifying triggers to substance use, coping skills to use when a trigger presents itself, as well as sober activities in their daily life that support the development of a positive sense of self.
